Pizza on the Beach
Let me share with you upfront in one of my very first posts a couple of things: First, I'm partial to St. Augustine. My fiance and I bought some undeveloped land there about 8 months ago and we plan to build the place we'll retire there. As a result, you'll likely be inundated with many, many stories and references to my favorite Florida city, the oldest city in the United States. Second, we have a personal tradition of experimenting with local pizza places when we travel. It started with our first trip to St. Augustine 15 years ago, and we've continued this tradition everywhere we go.
I'm so excited to start this whole experience by sharing with you my all time favorite pizza place: Antonio's New York Style Pizza.
Antonio's is a tiny pizza diner that doesn't look like much from the outside, but trust me when I say you won't be disappointed. They make their own dough and use homemade sauce and fresh ingredients. They are located seconds from the public access point to the beach and St. John's County Fishing Pier. Pizzas are available by the slice or whole pies.
Yes, there are some other menu items - a few appetizers and sides, as well as a few sandwiches and pastas. I've never tried any of these other items, though, because I'm so in love with the pizza. Something about their homemade sauce is just incredible.
I'm not ashamed to say that when we were in St. Augustine for a week last month, we ate there at least twice. They do deliver, which is great when you're staying at one of the hotels along A1A Beach Boulevard on the island, but I've never had them deliver. We much prefer to grab our pizza and head back to the outdoor seating areas along the beach and the pier and enjoy our pizza there.
Their dining room is small, and hasn't reopened since closing for Covid, but let's face it, no one wants to eat indoors in a tiny dining room when you can walk the length of a football field and enjoy hot homemade pizza while watching the waves hit the shores.
Don't let their tiny space and unassuming facade convince you to pass this up. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
