Community Guidelines

 Like any other page or community group, we want everyone to feel like this is a safe place where you can express yourself and share your thoughts. I truly hate to start off with setting rules for conduct when we're all adults, but this is the world we live in and here we are. We've got just a few guidelines we'd like everyone to keep in mind, both here and on all our social media and internet outlets:

  • This is not a political site. We won't post political opinions, and we appreciate that you don't bring politics into your comments.
  • Being rude, treating others with disrespect, and bullying will not be tolerated.
  • This site is geared toward adults with the means to travel. While we won't be posting anything ridiculous or obscene that's inappropriate for children, there might be some adult language here sometimes. This is your warning! Formal complaints about content being inappropriate will be cause for your dismissal from this site and all of our social media.
  • If you have a complaint about a group member or someone who's commenting here on this site, we strongly urge you to disengage from that individual and contact us personally and directly to resolve the matter. The easiest way to do this is to go to our Facebook page and contact us through messenger.

 Located on Florida 16 just off I-95, the St. Augustine Aquarium opened in 2016. Somewhat small in size while the owners are building their dream, this open air facility still provides family oriented fun. Leave your notions behind about traditional larger aquariums. This is a small, open-air experience that's still growing, and is more of a sanctuary than what people expect from an aquarium. Their mission is "marine conservation through education," and their informative staff is always on hand to educate guests about life under the sea and conservation efforts. Castillo de San Marcos, Defender of St. Augustine

The Castillo de San Marcos was built by the Spanish to defend St. Augustine, Florida, and the Atlantic trade route. As with many things in the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States, it is the oldest masonry fortress in the continental US and preserves more than 450 years of cultural intersections. Located on the western shore of the Matanzas Bay, its construction was ordered by Governor Francisco de la Guerra y de la Vega after a 1668 raid of St. Augustine by English privateer Robert Searles that destroyed much of the city and damaged the existing wooden fort. It was designed by Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza, with construction beginning in 1672. Construction of the core of the fortress was finished in 1695, although the fort would undergo many changes, additions, and renovations over the centuries. Castle Warden, Ripley's Original Odditorium

There are 33 Ripley's Believe It or Not! museums across North America, but did you know that none of them were opened during Robert Ripley's lifetime? Or that the original and first odditorium is located in St. Augustine, Florida? My first visit to a Ripley's Odditorium was during my most recent trip to the Oldest City, and it piqued my curiosity about the history of the building and of Ripley himself. Castle Warden, shown above, was built in 1887 by William G. Warden of Philadelphia as a winter home. It's an imposing four stories of poured concrete Moorish revival architecture. Warden himself was partners with Henry Flagler and John D. Rockefeller in the Standard Oil Company, the president of the St. Augustine Gas & Electric Light Company, and the financial director of the St. Augustine Improvement Company. Castle Otttis: An Unusual Roadside Attraction

 If you're on A1A Highway about three miles north of St. Augustine, you'll catch a glimpse of the turrets of Castle Otttis (yes, there are three t's in its name, I double checked). Designated as a garage due to a clerical error, it's an unusual sight to see as you're driving along the coastal highway. Built by Ottis Sadler and Rusty Ickes between 1984 and 1988, its design was based on Irish castles from about 1,000 years ago. It was designed to be a landscape sculpture, open to the elements and rising over 50 feet tall. When the pair began working on the castle, it was not intended to be a business or residence. Their primary goal was the creation of a work of art, one that would evoke the spirit of an old Christian Church or Irish Abbey. Sadler and Ickes handled all of the masonry themselves with no additional paid labor.
